Thanksgiving has become more about the turkey & dressing and parades & football games, than about giving thanks to the One who deserves our thanks.
So, let’s pretend we’re sitting around our family table for the Thanksgiving feast. I ask the question, “what are you thankful for?”. Let’s all answer this question with at least one thing for which we’re thankful to God (you can include as many as you like, but let’s include at least one each).
Oh, and another thing, let’s preface our statements with, “I’m thankful to God for….” (or something like that). We would do well to remember that “every good and perfect gift is from above” (James 1:17). Our holy and majestic Creator God of all glory is the one who deserves our praise and thanksgiving. So, let’s direct our thanks to Him, and give Him all the credit for the blessings in our lives.
Here are a few of mine:
I’m thankful to God for the blessing of a wife who loves me despite my shortcomings.
I’m thankful to God for the spiritual growth of my two oldest sons
I’m thankful to God for the privilege of serving as pastor of NewBranch
I’m thankful to God for forgiving me and extending mercy and grace to me daily
I’m thankful to God for keeping me dependent on Him
I’m thankful to God that Susan’s dad will be able to spend Thanksgiving dinner with us
That’s just a few….what about you? What do you want to tell the Lord, “Thank You” for?
Also, here’s a freebie from “The Valley of Vision”. This is a Thanksgiving Day favorite…and might help to jog your memory about all the things God deserves a “thank you” for in your life. Enjoy!
O My God,
Thou fairest, greatest, first of all objects,
my heart admires, adores, loves thee,
for my little vessel is as full as it can be,
and I would pour out all that fullness before thee in ceaseless flow.
When I think upon and converse with thee
ten thousand delightful thoughts spring up,
ten thousand sources of pleasure are unsealed,
ten thousand refreshing joys spread over my heart,
crowding into every moment of happiness.
I bless thee for the soul thou hast created,
for adorning it, for sanctifying it, though it is fixed in barren soil;
for the body thou hast given me,
for preserving its strength and vigour,
for providing senses to enjoy delights,
for the ease and freedom of my limbs,
for hands, eyes, ears that do thy bidding;
for thy royal bounty providing my daily support,
for a full table and overflowing cup,
for appetite, taste, sweetness,
for social joys of relatives and friends,
for ability to serve others,
for a heart that feels sorrows and necessities,
for a mind to care for my fellow-men,
for opportunities of spreading happiness around,
for loved ones in the joys of heaven,
for my own expectation of seeing thee clearly.
I love thee above the powers of language to express, for what thou art to thy creatures.
Increase my love, O my God, through time and eternity.
